Northwest Connection’s 20’ x 72” Willie powerboat can comfortably accommodate 4 people at a time, plus the guide. Accommodating larger groups is easily arranged with additional guides to ensure everyone gets a chance out on the water. There is no limit to the number of people you can bring!
The ‘1st run’ Kenai King salmon start to show up the beginning of June, peaking at about the third week. They tend to be a bit smaller in body size than their ‘second run’ siblings with size ranging between 25 and 35lbs. A slot limit is in affect during this time of the season ending on July 1st. No King may be retained that is larger than 46 inches or smaller than 55 inches. You are allowed 1 king per person per day.
The start of the ‘2nd run’ officially begins on July 1st with the elimination of the slot limit. A typical second run Kenai King is 35 to 40lbs. July is when we usually encounter the largest fish of the season with many fish in the 50 to 60lb size class. Each year we tangle with a couple true Kenai trophies, some fish pushing beyond the 70lb mark!
Around late June is when we start seeing massive numbers of Sockeye (also known as reds) salmon enter the river. Sockeye enter the rivers in large groups numbering in the tens of thousands. These tasty fish typically weigh between 5 and 10lbs and the limit is 3 per person per day. Once the Alaska department of fish and game decides enough fish have entered the river to achieve the escapement goal the limit will increase to 6 fish per person! The action with these hard fighters can be fast and furious since they tend to move in large schools. Sockeye are a good way to fill the freezer!
During the last week of July we start to see Silver (also known as Coho) salmon enter the Kenai River. These acrobatic fish are many people's favorite species to target due to their aggressive nature and excellent table fare. Silvers are very willing biters and are receptive to a wide range of fishing techniques. Casting spinners, floating salmon eggs under a bobber, pulling plugs, back bouncing eggs, twitching jigs, and fly fishing are all very effective techniques when pursuing silvers. The limit during August is 2 fish per person per day and increases to 3 fish per person per day in September.
The Kenai river system hosts a large population of resident rainbow trout and dolly varden that are available throughout the entire season. These aren't your normal run of the mill lake rainbows. These are epic, river born, trophy class rainbow trout that will test the skill of any angler. Imagine Montana trout fishing on steroids! Every year we catch multiple 'bows' over 30 inches long. The beauty of Kenai trout fishing is the action, even on a slow day each person can expect to catch multiple fish. We usually fly fish or spin fish for these ferocious biters. Although one rainbow or dolly less than 17 inches may be retained per person per day Northwest Connection practices a strict catch and release policy.
